Exploring 3D character animation in a Fine Art context
Sophie Koko Gate DYCP Grant 2023

Slug Life follows Tanya, a woman longing for something different, something non-human, something that will only exist if she creates it herself. The film explores female autonomy and questions whether it's possible to seek pleasure without consequence. It's my response to the current trend of portraying inter-special sexual relationships between women and non-human beings.

Slug Life was my first personal short film I made outside of University which was supported in part by the BFI and BBC’s short form scheme called Animation 2018. It has screened at over 100 festivals worldwide, including the Tate Modern, Sundance and BFI Festival.

A woman walks into a bar on the romantic island of Sicily, waiting to get lit. Its a visual poem about lust and the danger of an unkept mind. Two misfits find each other briefly, before the world crumbles around them into lava and smoke.
This film was funded by the GLAS FX Elevation award. It has screened at 50+ festivals worldwide and won the Best Animation Award at Indie Lisboa in 2022, best Animation Technique at Ottawa Animation festival and Jury Mention at LIAF.
This is my first exploration of 3D character animation. I will continue my exploration of this type of work in the period of development that the DYCP Grant would fund. The anthology of experimental work is intended for public gallery viewing and are to be displayed on separate screens. They follow the journey of 2 digital angels that have fallen to Earth. Angel 1 has rationalised every decision humans have made and explains the reasons for humanities complexities to Angel 2 - who has a more poetic, romantic view of Earth.

During the anthology, Angel 1 dies and Angel 2 must make sense of the world without him. The pieces will explore humanity and longing in the eyes of a non human entity, and questions what happens to cartoons and ideas once they die. What does the after-life of a cartoon look and feel like?

Below are 3 examples of my most recent work. I use animation as a tool to show visual poetry, world building and to create a specific unfamiliar tone. The films are intended to be viewed as art pieces as opposed to classical narrative short films.
